Hey, I’m Jac.

I used Bare + Free for years before I ever owned the brand, and this page exists to make switching feel simple, not overwhelming.

Some people love natural deodorant straight away. Others notice a short settling-in period.
Both experiences are normal.

This guide walks you through what can happen, what helps, and when things usually feel more consistent.

Why Make the Switch

From personal experience

I started using Bare + Free in 2019 after winning a tube in a competition. It quickly became part of my everyday routine… through workdays, movement, hormones, heat, and life with kids.

Years later, I bought the brand because it consistently worked better for me than anything else I’d tried.

About conventional deodorants

Many conventional deodorants and antiperspirants are designed to limit wetness by temporarily blocking sweat. Over time, your underarms can become used to that approach.

When you stop using them, it’s common for things to feel different at first while your routine adjusts.

Why people choose natural deodorant

People often choose natural deodorant for fewer synthetic ingredients, gentler skin support, and a more breathable feel once things settle.

With consistent use, many people find they actually sweat less overall and feel fresher using a smaller amount of product.

For me, Bare + Free holds up through real life… long days, warm weather, movement, and everything in between.

Here’s what’s helpful to know before you switch.

What to Expect When You Switch

The simple version.....Some people notice a short adjustment period when switching to natural deodorant, particularly if they’ve used antiperspirants for a long time.

This doesn’t happen to everyone.

When it does, it usually settles within a few weeks as your routine and application dial in.

A general guide

Everyone’s experience is a little different, but this is a common pattern.

Week 1 - 2

You may experience excess sweating during the detox phase. This is completely normal and most people find once they've been using a natural deodorant for a while they actually end up sweating less overall.

Week 2 - 4

Your body odour will have its ups and downs until all is settled. It might be a good idea to go easy on high odour foods (eg. garlic) while you're transitioning.

Week 4 - 6

Your body settles into its new rhythm.

The key

Consistency and the right amount.
Once those two things are in place, most people find natural deodorant fits easily into their routine.

What Helps While Things Settle

🍋 Optional reset support

Some people like to give their underarms a gentle reset when switching products. This can look like a clay or charcoal mask once or twice a week to help remove product build-up and support fresh skin.

This isn’t essential. Many people skip this entirely and still find everything settles naturally with consistent use.

🍋 Take it Slow!

Our skin has its own rhythm. When using a natural deodorant, starting with a small amount and building into a consistent routine allows your underarms to settle without feeling overloaded.

A thin layer is plenty. Consistency matters more than using more product

Here's our version of taking it slow

Day 1 Apply the smallest amount (I mean small)

Day 2 Have a deodorant free day

Day 3 Apply another small amount

Day 4 Apply another small amount

Day 5 Have a deodorant free day

Day 6 Apply a little bit more than previously

Day 7 Use a small amount

Day 8 Use what is needed and continue on being Bare + Free

🍋 Use an Antibacterial Wash

Body odour is caused by bacteria, not sweat itself. Washing your underarms well with a gentle cleanser can help things feel fresher, especially in the early weeks.

Clean, dry skin gives natural deodorant the best chance to work as intended.

🍋 If Things Feel Different at First

🩵 More sweating than usual

This can happen early on. Most people find things settle as their routine becomes consistent and their body finds its rhythm.

🩵 Skin feeling sensitive

Use a smaller amount and apply to clean, dry skin. If sensitivity continues, Bicarb Free is designed for more reactive underarms.

🩵 Odour ups and downs

Heat, stress, hormones, movement, and fabric choices can all influence how things feel day to day. This doesn’t mean your deodorant has stopped working… it usually means your body is responding to real life.

If odour feels stronger or more persistent, especially during hormonal shifts or warmer weather, our Bicarb Free formula offers extra strength support while still being gentle on sensitive skin.

🩵 Needing to reapply

Reapplying is normal on warm days or high movement days. Natural deodorant supports odour — it doesn’t block sweat.
