Spring skin is confusing. One day you're moisturising twice because your face still feels tight from winter. A week later you're shiny by lunchtime, breaking out in places you haven't broken out in years, and wondering why the rich cream you loved in July suddenly feels like cling wrap.
You haven't done anything wrong. Your skin is responding to a real shift, and your routine needs to shift with it.
This is your spring reset. Not a complete redo, just an intentional handful of adjustments that get your skin out of winter mode and ready for what's coming.
Why Spring Throws Your Skin Off
A few things happen at once when the weather turns.
Humidity rises. Warmer air holds more moisture. Skin that needed heavy hydration in August suddenly feels suffocated by the same products.
Oil production picks up. Your sebaceous glands respond to temperature. As things warm up, you produce more oil, and the moisturisers and oils that were carrying you through winter now sit on top of overactive skin.
The sun strengthens fast. Australian UV index can climb hard from September. Skin that hasn't seen real sun for months is unprepared.
Pollen and allergens spike. If you have any tendency toward sensitivity, eczema, or rosacea, spring is when your skin tells you about it.
Winter buildup is sitting on your face. Months of richer products, heating, and slower cell turnover leave a layer that needs gently lifting before fresh skin shows through.
The whole season is a transition, not a fixed state. Your routine should be too.
The Spring Reset, Step by Step
1. Lighten your moisturiser
The richest cream you used in July is doing too much now. Your skin will tell you, you'll feel coated rather than nourished.
Switch to a lighter texture. Lotions, gel creams, or simple plant oils blended with hyaluronic acid work beautifully. You're aiming for hydration without heaviness.
If you're not sure where to start, the gentler textures from Alluring Minerals and Aktivait Skin are perfect for this transition. Effective hydration without the winter weight.
2. Get serious about SPF
If you slacked on sunscreen through winter, this is the week to stop.
Australian sun in September is no joke, and unprotected skin in spring is the single biggest cause of pigmentation, fine lines, and accelerated ageing.
A mineral SPF 30 or 50, every single morning. Not just on beach days. Every day. The 60 seconds it takes to apply is the highest leverage skincare habit you have.
3. Lift winter buildup, gently
Months of rich products, slower turnover, and dry indoor air leave your skin slightly congested. A small amount of gentle exfoliation reveals the fresh skin underneath.
A mild AHA (lactic acid is my pick for spring) or an enzyme exfoliant 2 to 3 times a week is plenty. Skip the gritty scrubs. Always follow with hydration.
If you've never exfoliated before, start with once a week and see how your skin responds. Less is more here.
4. Lean into hydrating serums (not heavier creams)
The temptation in spring is to keep piling product on out of habit. Resist it.
Instead of richer moisturisers, layer hydrating serums. Hyaluronic acid is the workhorse. It holds moisture without weight. Niacinamide strengthens your skin barrier and calms any spring sensitivity. Vitamin C in the morning brightens the dullness winter left behind and supports collagen as the sun strengthens.
Apply serums to slightly damp skin, then a light moisturiser, then SPF.
5. Calm down on the actives
Spring skin can be reactive. Pollen, fluctuating hormones, the seasonal shift itself.
If you've been layering retinol, AHAs, BHAs, and a strong vitamin C, this is the week to dial back. Pick one active you actually need. Park the rest until your skin settles.
If your skin is acting up (redness, breakouts, sensitivity it didn't have in winter) the answer is almost always less, not more.
6. Adjust your deodorant rhythm
You're sweating more again. That's normal and healthy.
If you slipped into a once a day rhythm through winter, you might find you need a midday top up as the days warm up. That's not natural deodorant failing, that's your body doing what it should.
Bare + Free natural deodorants all transition seamlessly between seasons. The Original handles spring sweat well. The Friendly Bicarb Free is the better choice if your skin gets reactive in the seasonal transition.
Don't be tempted to swap back to antiperspirant just because you're sweating more. That's exactly the wrong move. Your body is doing useful work.
7. Drink your water back up
We all under hydrate in winter. The seasonal shift back to warmer weather means you need to consciously rebuild the habit.
Two litres a day, minimum. More if you're moving more. Spring sun pulls moisture out of skin from the outside. You need to be replacing it from the inside.
Your Spring Routine, in Order
Morning:
Rinse with lukewarm water. Hydrating serum (hyaluronic acid or niacinamide). Light moisturiser. Mineral SPF.
Evening:
Gentle creamy cleanser (or oil cleanse if you've worn SPF and makeup). Treatment serum (vitamin C if you're using one, or your chosen active 2 to 3 times a week). Light moisturiser.
Weekly:
Gentle exfoliation 2 to 3 times. Hydrating mask once a week if your skin is feeling dehydrated mid transition.
Body:
Body oil or lotion to damp skin after the shower. Natural deodorant. Sunscreen on any exposed skin if you're outside for any length of time.
That's it. Eight products, plus your weekly extras. Anything more is performing wellness rather than doing it.
Lifestyle Bits That Make a Disproportionate Difference
Get morning sun. Five to ten minutes outside before 9am supports your circadian rhythm and helps spring shift your sleep back to a healthier pattern. Bonus, vitamin D production starts up properly.
Shorten your showers. Hot showers strip your skin barrier. Five to seven minutes, warm not hot, then moisturise within three minutes of getting out.
Open the windows. Spring air is good for your skin barrier and your nervous system both. Let it in.
Pay attention to allergy load. If pollen is destroying you, it shows up in your skin too. Antihistamines, an air purifier, washing pillowcases more often. Underrated skin care.
Welcome the Shift
Your skin is built to adapt across seasons. Your job is to give it support during the transition rather than fighting against the change.
Spring is a reset for your skin and your routine and your wellness habits all at once. Lighten what's heavy. Brighten what's dull. Protect what's about to be exposed. Trust your skin to do the rest.
